A new chapter.
I announced today on LinkedIn that ReCODE Medical — the AI medical-coding company I co-founded with Matthew Segar, MD about 20 months ago — has been acquired.
We bet that medical procedure coding was being structurally under-served by the foundation labs, and that the gap wouldn't close on its own. So the two of us built the fix, and it beats the billion-dollar labs in our domain.
One of the most salient takeaways in an era of growing anti-AI sentiment: when building your own thing, AI unambiguously amazing because you directly benefit from the scaling it provides. However, as an employee in a large company like Meta, you don't get to benefit from the scale. You're still paid for your time, and odds are, inevitably, you'll be laid off.
Positioning oneself to benefit from the scaling enabled by AI is absolutely vital.
